The 2025 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney on March 22 is the primary two-year-old Thoroughbred race in the world of racing. With a prize money of $5 million, this Group 1 1200m sprint for all winners has remained the world’s richest for juveniles. This paper looks at the history of the race, the current contenders, and the trainers and jockeys who may play a role in the 2025 race.

The Golden Slipper: A Brief History and an Analysis of the Event

History and Recognition

The Golden Slipper Stakes has been running since 1957 with the main purpose of showing off the best Australian two-year-old horses. The first winner of the horse race, Todman, set a very high standard when he won the race by eight lengths and went on to sire the next four champions. By the year 1986, the race became the first in New South Wales to pay $1 million in prize money and thus cemented its position as one of the key events of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Major Developments

Distance: This race has been run at 1200 meters since 1973, which is enough distance to challenge the early speed without asking too much of the horses.

Prize Money Growth: The prize money has increased from $1 million in 1986 to $5 million in 2025, which shows how popular and important the event has become.

Winners: Trainer Gai Waterhouse has won eight Golden Slippers (2001–2024) and has passed her father T.J. Smith who won seven editions. Shane Dye and Ron Quinton have been the jockeys of four winners each.

Impact on Breeding and Racing

Winners are usually used as parents or mothers of winners and thus incorporate the race into the Australian breeding industry. For instance, Sepoy in 2011 and Pierro in 2012 are examples of horses that won the race and in the process increased their stud fees. It also acts as a springboard for Group 1 wins as Shinzo did in 2023 to finish third in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

The 2025 Golden Slipper: Event Overview

Race Details

Date: Saturday, March 22, 2025

Location: Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, Sydney

Distance: 1200m (Turf, Right-Handed)

Conditions: A Weight For All (Colts/Geldings: 56.5 kg; Fillies: 54.5 kg).

How to Get to the Race and the Races that Lead Up to It

Horses usually gain their entry through trials like the Todman Stakes for colts and geldings and the Reisling Stakes for fillies. The Pago Pago Stakes and the Magic Night Stakes have emerged as key form guides recently. In 2023, Shinzo used the Pago Pago Stakes to win, as Stratum did in 2005, again.

Golden Slipper Day

The main event is accompanied by four other Group 1 races on the same day:

George Ryder Stakes (1500m)

Ranvet Stakes (2000m)

The Galaxy (1100m)

Rosehill Guineas (2000m)

This is an annual event that draws more than 30,000 people who come to watch the racing, fashion and be entertained.

Contenders and Horses to Watch in 2025

Shaggy: The Rising Star

Shaggy (by Sandbar) is another leading contender after a 2.23 length victory in the Listed Pierro Plate at Randwick on February 15, 2025. Although he was not entered for the first time, his owners have agreed to pay the $150,000 late entry fee after seeing his third straight victory. He is likely to run at the front and has the potential to “swallow pressure” as noted by jockey Adam Hyeronimus. Current Odds: $11.

Pallaton and United States: Challengers in the Wings

Pallaton (Wootton Bassett) was the favourite going into the Pierro Plate but only managed a fourth place finish, however, he is a poor form choice prior to that. United States, another highly expected colt, lost to Shaggy but may try again in the Todman Stakes.

Fillies to Monitor

Although fillies are penalized by 2kg of weight, Comedy finished a length behind the winner in the Pierro Plate and showed that she runs 1200m. A similar weight situation was seen in 2024 when Lady Of Camelot won and cross-sexual comparison is possible.

The Race-makers and Jockeys Who Will Define the Race

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott: The Dynasty Continues

Waterhouse, in partnership with Adrian Bott, is trying for Golden Slipper number 9 after winning in 2024 with Lady Of Camelot. Among the 159 nominations for 2025 from Waterhouse and Bott, there are many Written Tycoon and Pierro progeny, which shows the range.

Allan Kehoe: The Underdog’s Ascent

The relatively unknown Kehoe from Wyong has suddenly brought Shaggy into the mix. His focus on patience (only making the horse’s race debut after he had peaked) is an indication of good planning and preparation.

Jockey Tactics

Adam Hyeronimus (Shaggy): His capacity to save energy when riding upfront may be a turning point.

Tommy Berry: A three-time Slipper winner, likely to partner a Waterhouse/Bott entry.

Betting Landscape and Odds Analysis

Market Trends

As of February 2025, futures markets highlight:

Shaggy: From $26 to $11 as of the Pierro Plate.

Pallaton: The odds have decreased to $15 after the most recent loss.

Apocalyptic and North England: Unproven but touted by early entries.

Some Historical Betting Insights

Favourites have been rather inconsistent winning only five times since 2008. However, horses priced below $8 such as Lady Of Camelot at $6.50 in 2024 have been better than long shots.

Important Factors That Influence Odds

Barrier Draw: Since 1983, horses that started from the inner barriers have won an overall 10 times up to date.

Pre-race Form: Since 2009, all winners had also won or come in second in their last preparation race.

Trainer Form: Horses trained by Waterhouse are always a force to be reckoned with, particularly the eight winners and nineteen podium finishers.

The 2025 Golden Slipper Stakes is the personification of pedigree, preparation and tactical racemanship. This year’s champion could be Shaggy, a surprise entry that dislodges established stables, or Gai Waterhouse, who seeks her ninth title. The race is set to reinforce its status as a launchpad for future champions when the final field and barrier draw are released on March 18. No matter who emerges victorious in the 2025 edition, the race will only continue to strengthen the already legendary Golden Slipper.

Paul Kent NRL Tips Round 11

KNIGHTS v EELS Parramatta have failed to score first in eight of their nine games this season. The Knights are $1.83 first try scorer so that looks a solid bet. That said, I like the Eels, at $2, to jag one and get the win away. Their attack has greatly

EELS v DOLPHINS Mitch Moses has revamped the Eels and brought Josh Addo-Carr right into the anytime tryscorers market at $1.62, but the bookies are already onto it. Addo-Carr is nicely priced at $6.75 to be first try scorer. KNIGHTS v TITANS Tough one given both are out of sorts.
