We’re back! A new season means a clean slate, but the hunt for value remains unchanged. With rain forecast in Sydney, we’re zeroing in on Flemington and Eagle Farm, where we’ve found three runners at juicy odds who can launch your Showdown ticket up the leaderboard.
Leg 3 – Flemington R5 – #13 Almairac
Don’t let the unassuming form line fool you! This horse has some serious historical scalps. He was only beaten 3L by Vow And Declare a year ago, in a race where Knight’s Choice (2024 Melbourne Cup winner!) ran third. Two back he ran a solid third at Caulfield over 2000m, then didn’t quite see out the 2400m. Back to 2000m, back to Flemington, and back with Ethan Brown in the saddle (2 wins from 3 rides). Massive blowout hope.
Leg 9 – Flemington R7 – #6 Danni’s St Darci
She’s no household name, but this mare flies under the radar. Last prep she placed on Derby Day behind Isthmus, then beat Cigar Flick, who just returned with a win in Sydney. She improves second-up, has form at 1200m, and thrives in these off-season sprint races. The market is underrating her chances in the feature.
Leg 10 – Eagle Farm R8 – #6 Deepour
It’s been a long time between drinks for Deepour, but he’s been consistent in better races since, including the Ramornie Handicap and a strong BM100 at Ballarat. He’s back with Adam Campton, trialled well, and gets in light with 55kg. With plenty of speed on here, he can camp just behind the pace and charge over the top. He’s well and truly good enough for this.
Summary
Almairac, Danni’s St Darci, and Deepour; three proven performers at double-digit odds who can give you a fast start to the new season. Early season form can be volatile, and that’s where the value lies.
